Sending you a warm "hola!" from Playa del Carmen, México! I'm down here this week for a dear friend's wedding, and yes, I got my hair braided like Rumi from KPop Demon Hunters. What follows is a little reflection on why that movie is so goddamn great (and how it relates to my work.)
**Spoiler Alert**
If you haven't seen KPop Demon Hunters yet [who are you?], WATCH IT. Also, my brief writings here include mega spoilers, so proceed only if you dare.
Here it goes....
Rumi is part demon, yet she tries (futilely) to hide it from her companions because, alas, they are "demon hunters" after all. In the end, she embraces all of herself in a spectacular musical number, "What It Sounds Like" ("my voice without the lies"), and successfully establishes a new world order. No big deal.
I have SO much to say about why I love this movie so much -- the story narrative, visual art, and music are all deeply thoughtful and beautifully crafted -- but I'll limit myself to what I experience as the essence of the film:
inner union
KPop Demon Hunters is a hilarious and gorgeous call for our inner union of "the light" and "the dark."
Note that it is NOT a call for us to eliminate the darkness with the light -- oh no. "Darkness and harmony," Rumi sings. Embrace the totality of our being. Our darkness is only a problem as long as we reject it and hide it and wish it wasn't so.
When we make love to the darkness in ourselves we turn into KPop superstars with amazing hair.
In all sincerity, this is the core of what I do as a shamanic healing arts practictioner: I support you in accessing and integrating the darkest, scariest, most banished parts of your being.
The rewards of this harrowing work are manifold: greater power, agency, pleasure, peace, and utter fabulousness. You golden creature, you. Let's do this!
